Pater Noster is an award winning retreat set on one of Sweden’s legendary lighthouse islands, surrounded by open sea and wild nature, accessible only by boat or helicopter and cut off from the mainland. Built in 1868 to guide sailors through treacherous waters, the lighthouse was extinguished in 1977 before reopening in 2020 as an intimate luxury hotel. Nine individually designed rooms, including the Island Suite known as the Bakery Cottage, combine 150 years of history with Scandinavian minimalism. Located within a protected nature reserve, the island invites guests to reconnect with the elements through fishing trips, lobster safaris and snorkelling among seals, while lighthouse massages, seawater heated hot tubs and sauna provide restoration. Art is central to the experience: each year the island presents a curated exhibition and in 2026 Art & Science of Water features works by Rachel Moore, Christy Lee Rogers and Lara Zankoul. The season also brings open air concerts beneath the lighthouse tower, including Swedish singer songwriter Lisa Miskovsky, as well as visits from Michelin starred chefs. Best Gastronomy: Nature leads the kitchen. Head chef Johan Bengtsson, a marine biologist, harvests seaweed and coastal ingredients from nearby shores. Fresh fish, shellfish and seasonal produce from local farmers inspire a cuisine rooted in the sea and Sweden’s west coast, while autumn marks the celebrated lobster season known as the hunt for black gold alongside fishermen.
